Day 6 – Tuesday 30th May – Oceanside RV Resort, Saanichton to Riverside RV Resort Whistler
We start today’s journey in the rain and consider the options suggested by Chris and Hilary for this part of the drive. We either stop at Duncan to view totem poles or we continue to the town of Chemainus with its outdoor gallery of giant murals. Having seen quite a number of totems, both at towns on the cruise and in Vancouver, we opt for the giant murals and are stunned by both the sheer number and quality of them. No large wall space is spared and we talk with the lady in the Information Centre who tells us that they are still being added to with new murals painted very year. Figures are life size or bigger and the detail is remarkable.
Then its on to Nanaimo for the ferry back to the mainland. From here we take the Sea to Sky Highway, built for the Vancouver Whistler Winter Olympics in 2010. It’s a good road and on a clear day there would be great views as the road climbs into the mountains, however it is not a clear day and everything is shrouded in cloud and mist. We do stop to visit the waterfalls at the Shannon Falls and a little further on at Brandywine Falls. Both are impressive and yet very different in character. These are our first experience of the magnificent grandeur of Canadian waterfalls and before our tour is over we shall have enjoyed seeing very many more.
